MILESTONES IN KIENZLE HISTORY
- 1822 Johannes Schlenker founds a clocksmith's workshop in Schwenningen and starts with manufacture and sales of hand-crafted, wooden twelve-hour clocks with a cord-driven (weighted) winding mechanism. When his three sons take over the business, there are already 20 members of staff producing 2,000 pendulum and wall clocks per year.
- 1855 "Nightwatchman's recording clocks" are sold all over the world.
- 1883 24-year-old merchant Jakob Kienzle marries into the Schlenker family and becomes partner in the company, which is now trading under the name "Schlenker & Kienzle". Production of so-called "flywheel clocks" featuring a solid fourteen-day regulator is introduced. The number of employees now exceeds 60.
- 1889 Launch of production of taximeter clocks, a cross between an odometer, a clock and a calculator.
- 1894 The product range is expanded to include the so-called "time stamp clocks" ("attendance recorders"), kitchen clocks, mantle and desk clocks.
- 1897 Jakob Kienzle (born April 12, 1859) becomes the sole owner.
-
- 1900 The product range is expanded to include the so-called "time stamp clocks" ("attendance recorders"), kitchen clocks, mantle and desk clocks.
- 1902 Schlenker & Kienzle set up a subsidiary in Milan and a sales office in London.
- 1903 For the first time, production figures for clocks and movements pass the million mark. A subsidiary is established in Paris.
- 1904 Launch of production of inexpensive pocket watches. This eventually leads to the well-known "Kienzle rugged pocket watch" which will be manufactured for decades.
- 1908 Launch of wrist watch production. A comprehensive watch catalogue lists 560 different models. Annual production of watches and movements surpasses two million pieces. Staff at home and abroad totals approximately 1,700.
- 1910 Launch of production of the first automotive clocks: for Rolls-Royce in England, for example. Almost every clock fitted in a German-made car in the 1950s and 1960s is produced by Kienzle. Customers include Jaguar, Daimler, BMW, Volvo, Audi, Renault, Ford and Opel/Vauxhall.
- 1911 "Kienzle Clock & Co" is set up in New York, USA.
- 1919 Conversion of "Uhrenfabriken Schlenker & Kienzle" into "Kienzle Uhrenfabriken KG, Schwenningen".
- 1920 Launch of development of Kienzle autographs, later marketed as Kienzle tachographs.
- 1922 Company converts from a limited partnership (KG) into a joint-stock company. Shares are restricted to family members.
- 1923 Sales office set up in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
- 1928 The Kienzle company is divided between the two sons Herbert and Christian into "Kienzle Uhrenbau" in Schwenningen and "Kienzle Taxameter & Apparate AG" in Villingen. Tachographs are introduced into the manufacturing programme.
- 1931 Launch of production and sale of the wrist-watch movement 051. About 25 million of these movements are fitted into watches and sold.
- 1932 During the 1930s, the automotive clock is developed further to the legendary 8-day aviation clock, which is incorporated into the cockpit instrument panel.
- 1938 Creation of the first Kienzle world time clock, which is unique and with continual development proves to be a real "gem of a clock".
- 1950 By the mid-1950s, more than half the adding and booking machines used in Germany are made by Kienzle/ Villingen.
- 1954 Production reaches three million mark again. The first parking meters are invented, manufactured almost exclusively by Kienzle in the 1950s and 1960s.
- 1956 The "people's automatic watch" is born, thus achieving the breakthrough for wrist watches with an automatic winding mechanism.
- 1963 Introduction of the first "Heliomat" solar clock. The "Superia" chronometer ticks in a gold-plated, 35 mm casing with a blast-welded steel back.
- 1964 The "Kienzle Zürich AG" subsidiary is set up. Kienzle Swiss watches are added to the high-end range of wrist watches.
- 1965 Sales offices set up in USA and Austria, turnover exceeds DM 60 million. Special exhibition of Kienzle timepieces in the City Hall, Hong Kong.
- 1969 Kienzle acquires a clock manufacturing plant in Brazil and establishes Kienzle do Brasil Ltda. in Sao Paulo. Production and sales of mechanical alarm clocks and quartz watches prosper.
- 1970 Launch of the "Kienzle-Automatic", the first functionally styled automatic alarm clock. Kick-off for the electronic movement 627. Production: over 16 million, worldwide distribution. Annual turnover passes the 80 million mark; about 6.4 million units are produced. Another very successful seventies venture is the development of electronic office machines and computers, partly in collaboration with the German computer specialist Heinz Nixdorf.
- 1972 For the first time, mechanical watches featuring a digital display appear alongside the mechanical wrist watches with an analogue display. "Kienzle life 2002" display the hours, minutes and seconds in three separate digital windows.
- 1974 Kienzle moves into the lead as Germany's biggest wrist-watch manufacturer. In order to open up to new markets, Kienzle adopts a resolute diversification strategy encompassing electric heating cost distributors and wing mirrors for cars in its production range.
- 1976 Kienzle is the first company to manufacture quartz LED wrist watches, simultaneously adopting the production of quartz analogue wrist watches.
- 1977 The first quartz radio alarm clocks hit the market.
- 1978 The first fully electronic "Variogong" chime and the new digital quartz stop watch "Chronostopp" are introduced.
- 1980 Launch of the new quartz movement 716. More than 27 million of these movements are manufactured until the end of 1987. Motor drive units for adjusting automotive wing mirrors go into serial production. Turnover exceeds DM 81 million.
- 1986 Kienzle introduces a new world time clock into its range. Besides analogue local time, selectable world times and dates in digital form, this also features a calendar that can be programmed until the end of the third millennium. With its polycrystalline solar generator, which even runs in very low light conditions and up to fourteen days when fully charged, the Kienzle solar clock represents a novelty.
- 1987 Launch of a new generation of quartz movements. Inauguration of the new factory building of Kienzle Uhrenfabriken. With 300 million timepieces sold all over the world, the brand becomes an international byword for German quality clocks and watches.
- 1989 Kienzle is taken over by DUFA (Deutsche Uhrenfabrik GmbH). With a daily production rate of more than 70,000 timepieces and movements, a staff of almost 800 and an annual turnover of approximately DM 120 million, the DUFA Group represents one of Europe's leading clock and watch manufacturers.
A highlight of the 1990s: the most water-resistant watch in the world with a water-resistance level up to 12,000 m. The casing of this diver's watch is filled with silicone oil to enable it to withstand the enormous pressure at such depths. - 1992 The new collection of radio-controlled timepieces with the LCA radio-controlled calendar clock are introduced as a world novelty. The world's first radio-controlled "satellite" alarm clock featuring an analogue waking time setting is presented at the Inhorgenta trade fair in Munich. Katja Seizinger, Germany's SKI hope for the Olympics, is sponsored by Kienzle.
- 1996 A new radio-controlled movement is perfected: the smallest dual-motor, radio-controlled movement with the fastest setting system to date: a world innovation! Whereas other movements of this size require up to 25 minutes to adjust to the correct time, this movement displays the right time within just five minutes of being put into operation.
- 1997 Company is taken over by the Highway Holdings Group, Hong Kong.
- 1998 Relaunch of Kienzle's large clock range and the production of quartz alarm clocks for reputed European brand suppliers.
-

Coverage of different market sectors and sales outlets at home and abroad has been ensured by streamlining the product range and through delineation.
Innovative new developments, such as the high-tech ANA / Digi watch, the FL 22602 board watch featuring a unique winding technique, plus the Heritage Retro replicas underpin Kienzle's image as a leading brand company.
