Q. I have acquired a wood mantle clock dated around 1900-1930 and am trying to locate its maker. It's movement is 8/14 day with single gong chime. Mark on back plate is "B" inside a "Half Moon".
A. From Karl Kochman's book of European Clock & Watch Trade Marks, the following: Badische Uhrenfabrik A G Furtwangen, Black Forest, Germany. Founded by Adam Fehrenbach 1860-77. By 1906 they had 700 employees and had offices in London, Milan, Zurich and Hong Kong (opened in 1893).
The company was closed after 1918 and did not start business again until 1927. Again, after the second world war, the company was closed in 1945. However they obviously started up again sometime later as in 1979 they had 180 employees. The company made many types of clocks including wall, mantel, 400 day and 'Joker' style carriage clocks. At one time, c1898, according to Peter Wotton (clocks June 1996), Badische were supplying 400 day clocks to Kundo for selling under the Kundo name. There is a set of three articles giving the history of Badische 400 day clocks published in the clocks magazine (Aug-Oct 1997) by Peter Wotton.
This company had numerous crescent moon with a B trade marks over the years of operation. Other tradenames used by Badische were:-
